What happened

Formula 1 is preparing a contingency plan that would move the end of the 2026 championship to Europe if the final races in Qatar and Abu Dhabi cannot go ahead. F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali said a decision is expected by the middle of September, giving the championship time to organise replacement events if necessary.

The current calendar places the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail from 27–29 November, followed by the Abu Dhabi finale at Yas Marina from 4–6 December. Both races remain scheduled, but the championship is keeping alternative options available amid regional instability.

Why it matters

A late calendar change would affect far more than the identity of the circuits. Teams would need to redirect freight, rebook accommodation and prepare cars for potentially cold European conditions rather than the warm, predictable weather normally expected in the Middle East.

The sporting consequences could also be significant. A wet or low-temperature European finale would create a very different tyre and setup challenge, potentially reshaping a close championship fight during its decisive races.

Imola has been discussed as one possible replacement, although a race in northern Italy near the beginning of December would carry an obvious risk of poor weather. F1 has also ruled out simply adding another race in Las Vegas.

What to watch next

  • The security assessment: Qatar and Abu Dhabi will remain on the calendar unless F1 concludes that the events cannot be staged safely.
  • Replacement venues: European circuits must demonstrate that they can host a Grand Prix at unusually short notice.
  • The September decision: Confirmation by mid-September would give teams roughly two months to adjust their end-of-season plans.
