Silverstone secures British MotoGP through 2028
Silverstone will continue hosting the British Motorcycle Grand Prix until at least 2028. MotoGP and the circuit have agreed a two-year contract extension securing the event's short-to-medium-term future.
The British Grand Prix has a secure home
MotoGP has agreed a new contract with Silverstone that will keep the British Motorcycle Grand Prix at the circuit through at least 2028. The two-year extension removes immediate uncertainty surrounding one of the championship's longest-established European markets.
Silverstone returned to the motorcycle world championship calendar in 2010 after Donington Park had hosted Britain's premier-class event since 1987. Apart from cancellations in 2018 and 2020, it has remained MotoGP's British home ever since.
MotoGP has also confirmed that the 2027 British Grand Prix will again take place in August, although the complete calendar for the championship's new technical era has not yet been published.
Why Silverstone matters to MotoGP
The UK remains one of motorcycle racing's historically important markets, but MotoGP has not achieved the same recent attendance growth at Silverstone as Formula 1. The new agreement therefore provides stability while both the promoter and championship work on attracting a larger audience.
MotoGP has already experimented with additional promotion away from the circuit, including a London watch party and moving its British Grand Prix pre-event media activities into the capital. Silverstone and MotoGP say the extension allows that investment to continue.
Maintaining a secure venue also becomes particularly valuable as MotoGP approaches the 2027 regulations, when new 850cc motorcycles, reduced aerodynamics, a ban on ride-height devices and 100% non-fossil fuel will fundamentally change the championship's technical package.
The wider circuit calendar is becoming more important
Major championships increasingly compete for dates at Grade 1 circuits, while promoters also need enough commercial certainty to justify investment in infrastructure and fan facilities.
Silverstone is particularly valuable because it can host several of the world's largest championships. Alongside MotoGP, the circuit is an established Formula 1 venue and is also returning to the FIA World Endurance Championship calendar in 2027.
For MotoGP, retaining a proven circuit removes one calendar question as the championship prepares for its major rules reset and continues to develop its commercial strategy under new ownership.
What to watch next
- The full 2027 calendar: MotoGP has confirmed Britain's August slot but has yet to reveal the complete schedule.
- Attendance growth: Silverstone and MotoGP now have two more seasons to improve the event's reach in the British market.
- The 2027 motorcycles: The new technical regulations will fundamentally alter how bikes perform around Silverstone's high-speed layout.
- Beyond 2028: The latest agreement provides security rather than a long-term permanent commitment, so future negotiations will depend partly on the event's commercial performance.
