When was the track built?

Originally a 19th-century horse track, the oval was adapted for automobiles in 1903. The surface was paved in 1954 and steadily modernized, adding the infield road course the same year. Through resurfacing and minor geometry tweaks (including remeasurements to 1.032 mi in 1996 and 1.015 mi from 2004), the Mile preserved its hallmark: long, flat-ish corners that reward car balance and tire discipline.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race for automobiles ran in 1903, kicking off continuous eras of AAA/USAC Championship racing and later CART/Champ Car and IndyCar. Notable history includes Jim Clark’s dominant 1963 rear-engine Lotus win that helped swing American open-wheel toward modern designs.

What's the circuit like?

  • Momentum oval: Four near-constant-radius corners with light banking put the emphasis on minimum speed, clean air and tire longevity.
  • Brake-and-roll rhythm: Short chutes mean small balance changes compound; a tidy entry pays off all the way to corner exit.
  • Line craft: Multiple grooves develop late in the weekend, but patience on throttle remains key to keeping the rears alive on long runs.
  • Benchmark pace: IndyCar race lap record 0:22.1211; CART race laps dipped into the low 21s in the 1990s turbo era.

Lap records and benchmarks (by series)

  • IndyCar (race lap): 0:22.1211 - Hélio Castroneves, 2015 ABC Supply Wisconsin 250.
  • CART/Champ Car (race lap): 0:21.519 - Scott Pruett, 1998 Miller 200.
  • CART (qualifying, 1-lap): 185.500 mph (20.028 s) - Patrick Carpentier, 1998.
  • NASCAR (track notes): ~9° in turns, ~2.5° on straights; series history spans Xfinity/Truck eras with recent national-series returns.

Why go?

An American oval original - grandstands tight to the action, sightlines across the whole lap and strategy-heavy races that ebb and flow with tire wear. When cars are hooked up, the long arcs make overtakes into Turn 1 and Turn 3 deeply satisfying to watch.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • Turn 1 entry: Classic dive zone after the front stretch draft; great for restarts.
  • Turn 3 exit: See who protects the low line while keeping momentum for the back stretch.
  • Main grandstand/Pit straight: Full view of pit work, strategy swings and the sprint to the chequered.
  • Short chutes: Appreciate how tiny mid-corner corrections decide tire life over a stint.

Not just IndyCar: series at the Mile

USAC/AAA heritage: Decades of Championship Car history precede the CART/Champ Car/IndyCar eras.

NASCAR & ARCA: National-stock and ARCA events leverage the Mile’s momentum style and punishing long runs.

Infield road course: A 1.8 mile infield circuit supports club, testing and vintage events.
