When was the track built?

Dover opened in 1969 as a dual-purpose complex with a horse track and an auto-racing oval. Its extreme-for-a-mile banking and tight surface quickly gave it a reputation for speed and attrition. The switch to concrete in 1995 defined its modern character and durability.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race for NASCAR’s top division ran on July 6, 1969, with Richard Petty winning the Mason-Dixon 300.

What's the circuit like?

  • Steep and swift: 24° corners compress entry speeds and sling cars onto the straights - you’re always loading the right-front.
  • Concrete rhythm: Consistent grip but punishing on tyres and brakes over long green runs.
  • Benchmark pace: Modern Cup poles sit in the low-21s at ~167 mph; official race-lap record is 22.203 s. IRL once lapped under 20 seconds.

Lap records and benchmarks (1.000 mi concrete)

  • NASCAR Cup - qualifying record: 21.559 s - 166.984 mph - Denny Hamlin, Oct 5, 2019.
  • NASCAR Cup - race lap: 0:22.203 - Chase Elliott, 2019.
  • Indy Racing League - qualifying (outright): 19.438 s - 185.204 mph - Tony Stewart, Jul 18, 1998.

Records vary by series and era. Cup qualifying marks in 2019 eclipsed the previous 2014 record.

Why go?

Dover is a bullring with superspeedway speed. You’ll see divebombs into Turn 1, crossover exits off Turn 2 and pit cycles that flip the order on long green runs. The bowl-style grandstands give sightlines across the whole lap, and the concrete surface keeps the pace up all day.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • Frontstretch mid-to-high rows: Launches into Turn 1, pit road and the sprint to the line.
  • Turn 2 exit: Best read on who rolled the center and who will win the drag down the backstretch.
  • Turn 3 entry: Commitment zone where runs are made or lost before the final corner.

Not just one series - headline events at Dover

NASCAR Cup: Spring 400-miler anchors the calendar with high-intensity mile racing.

NASCAR Xfinity & Trucks: Concrete challenges amplify tyre management and restart craft across all three national series.
