Headline Events
Ambetter Health 400 - Quaker State 400
Two NASCAR Cup weekends with superspeedway-style packs since the 2022 reprofile.

When was the track built?

Ground broke in 1958 and the venue opened as Atlanta International Raceway in July 1960. In 1997 the track was flipped and rebuilt from a 1.522 mi true oval into today’s 1.540 mi quad-oval, adding the frontstretch doglegs and the 0.25 mi Legends oval. A major reprofile for 2022 increased turn banking to 28° and narrowed the racing surface, intentionally creating tighter packs and draft racing more akin to Daytona and Talladega.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race was the Dixie 300 on 31 July 1960, won by Fireball Roberts. Since then AMS has hosted decades of NASCAR showdowns, plus Indy Racing League rounds from 1998 to 2001 and IMSA sports cars in the early 1990s.

What's the circuit like?

  • Superspeedway vibes on a mile and a half: Since 2022 the 28° banking and narrowed lanes promote multi-line pack racing and frequent lead changes.
  • Tyre management still matters: Long green runs reward drivers who can keep right-rear temperatures under control while surfing the draft.
  • Two personalities over time: The 1997–2021 surface produced blistering single-car speeds and famous rim-riding runs; the current spec is all about momentum, pushes and timing energy off the corners.
  • Benchmark pace: Modern NASCAR race laps hover in the high 29s to low 30s. Historic open-wheel laps at Atlanta exceeded 224 mph average before the current rules and surface.

Lap records and benchmarks (by series and layout)

  • NASCAR Cup - race lap (current 1.540 mi, 28°): 0:29.361 - Josh Berry, Ford Mustang, 2024.
  • NASCAR Cup - qualifying lore: Geoff Bodine’s 197.478 mph pole in 1997 on fresh 1.540 mi asphalt remains one of the fastest 1.5 mi laps ever recorded.
  • IRL IndyCar - race lap (1997–2021 1.540 mi, 24°): 0:24.732 - Billy Boat, Dallara IR7, 1998 (224.163 mph).
  • IMSA GTP - race lap (2.522 mi road course): 1:13.514 - Juan Manuel Fangio II, Eagle Mk III, 1993.

Note: Layout and banking changes mean records are tracked separately by era.

Why go?

If you want edge-of-seat drafting and wild restarts on a compact stage, this is it. The current package produces constant shuffles for the lead, while the fan-friendly infield and sightlines let you follow the chess match of runs, pushes and blocks. Spring and summer Cup dates bring stacked triple-header weekends with Xfinity and Trucks.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • Tri-oval grandstands: Starts, finishes and three-wide sprints to the line with pit road in full view.
  • Turns 1-2: See the whole field fan out after restarts as lines form high, middle and low through the steepest banking.
  • Turns 3-4: Runs build here before the slingshot into the tri-oval - perfect for photo finishes.
  • Infield terraces: Close-up views of pit strategy and pack dynamics as momentum swings lap to lap.

Not just one series - headline events at Atlanta

NASCAR Cup: Ambetter Health 400 and Quaker State 400 anchor the calendar with superspeedway-style racing.

NASCAR Xfinity & Craftsman Trucks: Drafting duels and dramatic green-white-checkers match the Cup spectacle.

Indy Racing League history: High-speed ovals from 1998 to 2001 delivered 220+ mph laps and photo finishes.

Legends & grassroots: Thursday Thunder on the 0.25 mi “Thunder Ring” keeps the local ladder buzzing all summer.
