When was the track built?
Conceived by Bruton Smith and Curtis Turner, Charlotte opened in 1960 as one of NASCAR’s first purpose-built 1.5-mile superspeedways. It survived early financial swings, added grand condominiums and lighting for full-stadium night racing, and in 2018 debuted the now-famous ROVAL-a 2.28-mile, 17-turn hybrid course that kept the high-bank drama while threading a technical infield.
When was its first race?
The venue’s first race was the World 600 on June 19, 1960. That 400-lap marathon established Charlotte as NASCAR’s Memorial Day weekend tradition-a crown-jewel endurance test still known today as the Coca-Cola 600.
