Track Info
Kansas Speedway - Kansas City, Kansas, USA
Progressive-banked 1.5-mile tri-oval built for side-by-side racing - clockwise - 1.5 mi / 2.414 km with long, fast straights and multi-groove corners
When was the track built?
Ground broke in 1999 and the tri-oval opened in 2001 as the Midwest’s modern 1.5-mile showpiece. A major 2012 repave added the 2.37-mile road course and reconfigured the oval with progressive banking in the corners, unlocking multi-lane racing that’s become Kansas’ calling card.
When was its first race?
The venue’s first race weekend featured ARCA on Jun 2, 2001, followed by NASCAR national series that autumn. The inaugural NASCAR Cup race on Sep 30, 2001 went to Jeff Gordon.
What's the circuit like?
- Multi-groove momentum: The 17–20° progressive banking lets drivers run bottom, middle or the outside “Kansas lane”, keeping passes coming as rubber builds.
- Clean air vs. tire life: Track position matters, but long green runs reward cars that keep right-rear temps under control while maintaining corner exit speed.
- Wind factor: The open plains mean crosswinds can change balance corner to corner, especially through Turns 3–4.
- Benchmark pace: Modern Cup poles typically land around 29.8–30.2 s depending on temps and wind, with race laps hovering in the 30–31 s range over long runs.
Lap records and benchmarks (1.5 mi tri-oval)
- IndyCar - race lap: 0:24.8742 - Tomas Scheckter, Dallara IR-00, 2002.
- NASCAR Cup - race lap: 0:28.857 - Kyle Larson, 2015.
- NASCAR Xfinity - race lap: 0:30.796 - Tyler Reddick, 2019.
- NASCAR Craftsman Truck - race lap: 0:30.518 - Stewart Friesen, 2018.
- Indy Lights - race lap: 0:29.1639 - Al Unser, 2004.
- ARCA Menards - race lap: 0:31.184 - Tanner Gray, 2024.
Kansas also hosts frequent late-race photo finishes thanks to tire falloff and multi-lane runs off Turn 4.
Why go?
Kansas consistently delivers clean, racy shows you can follow with your eyes. Progressive banking creates multiple lines, strategy swings on tire wear and cautions shake up the order late. Spring and fall Cup dates anchor stacked triple-header weekends with Xfinity and Trucks, and the fan areas offer clear sightlines across the whole tri-oval.
Where's the best place to watch?
- Frontstretch grandstands: Starts, restarts and pit-road strategy with a sweeping view into the Turn 1 funnel.
- High rows in Turns 1–2: Best angle on the outside groove and who dares ride the wall on long runs.
- Turn 4 exit: See momentum lines converge for photo finishes to the stripe.
Not just one series - headline events at Kansas
NASCAR Cup: AdventHealth 400 (spring) and Hollywood Casino 400 (playoffs) - multi-groove chess with late cautions and razor-thin margins.
NASCAR Xfinity & Trucks: Drafting trains form on restarts, then tire wear spreads the field into multiple lines for classic intermediate-track battles.
ARCA Menards: Frequent first-time winners and tight packs make it a fan-friendly curtain-raiser on race weekends.
