Track Info
Queensland Raceway (Ipswich) - Willowbank, Queensland, Australia
The Paperclip - clockwise - 3.126 km national circuit with 6 turns, two long drags and heavy-brake hairpins that create classic slipstream passes
When was the track built?
Conceived in the late 1990s to replace the old Caversham-era style venues around Brisbane, Queensland Raceway opened in 1999 with a clean-sheet, safety-first design and wide sightlines. Since Tony Quinn’s purchase in 2021, the venue has undergone significant renovations including new pits, garages, hospitality and safety works in 2022–2025, plus resurfacing and paddock expansion.
When was its first race?
The venue’s first race season was 1999, quickly stepping into the national spotlight with the Queensland 500 endurance race and the Ipswich Supercars round. The circuit has remained a staple for top-level Australian cars and bikes.
What's the circuit like?
- Power to patience: Two long straights feed big stops at Turn 3 and Turn 6. Getting rotation without frying the rears is everything on hot Ipswich days.
- Simple on paper, tricky in practice: Six corners sounds easy, but wind direction and bumps make braking markers and trail-brake release a constant art, especially in Supercars and GT3.
- Fan-friendly visibility: Flat infield and open banks mean you can see a huge slice of the lap from many spots.
- Benchmark pace: Outright 1:04.0661 (Formula Holden). Modern references include GT3 1:07.3959, ASBK 1:07.265 and Supercars race-lap 1:09.2638.
Lap records and benchmarks (by series - National 3.126 km)
- Formula Holden - race lap: 1:04.0661 - Simon Wills, Reynard 94D, 1999.
- GT3 - race lap: 1:07.3959 - Paul Lucchitti, Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo, 2024.
- ASBK Superbike - race lap: 1:07.265 - Josh Waters, Ducati V4 R, 2025.
- Supercars - race lap: 1:09.2638 - Broc Feeney, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, 2025. Super2 also reset its practice/qualifying record in 2025.
- Sports Sedans - race lap: 1:06.8323 - Jordan Caruso, Audi A4, 2023.
Why go?
Because it delivers elbows-out racing you can actually follow with your eyes. The long straights and heavy stops breed overtakes, the open spectator banks give panoramic views and the upgraded pits bring you close to the teams. With Supercars, ASBK and GT World Challenge visits, the calendar is stacked.
Where's the best place to watch?
- Turn 3 hairpin: Deep-brake divebombs after the longest acceleration zone, plus switchbacks on exit set up passes into Turn 4.
- Turn 6 final corner: The lap’s last heavy stop decides photo finishes and rewards patient trail-braking.
- Main straight grandstand: Starts, restarts and pit action with a clear view down to the fast Turn 1 right.
Not just one series - headline events at Queensland Raceway
Supercars - Ipswich Super 440: Returned in 2025 with Gen3 cars after facility upgrades.
ASBK: Australia’s Superbikes regularly reset lap marks on the Paperclip’s big stops and hard drives.
GT World Challenge Australia: GT3s clock low 1:07s and showcase tyre strategy on hot Ipswich afternoons.
