When was the track built?

After outgrowing the old Caversham airfield course, the WA Sporting Car Club broke ground in 1968 and constructed a brand-new permanent circuit at Wanneroo. It opened as Wanneroo Park in March 1969, was renamed Barbagallo Raceway in 1992, and reverted to Wanneroo Raceway in 2020. Major modernisations since 2011 widened the track and added the infield pit complex and bridge.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race day was 2 March 1969. Through the 1970s the headline was the Six Hour Le Mans production car enduro, and in 1979 Wanneroo hosted the non-championship Australian Grand Prix for Formula Pacific machinery. Supercars first visited in 1973 and today headline the Perth Super 440.

What's the circuit like?

  • Short, busy, abrasive: A sub-55s lap for top categories means constant traffic, repeated heavy stops and relentless tyre load. Historically the sand-based surface made degradation a strategic factor.
  • T1 commitment: Fast right at the end of the pit straight sets up the lap and sorts who can carry speed while protecting fronts.
  • Downhill finale: The plunge to the last corner rewards patience on entry and traction on exit for the run to the flag.
  • Benchmark pace: Outright F3000 0:50.5769, with modern Supercars race laps in the high 53s and GT3 in the low 54s to high 53s. Night practice has yielded even quicker qualifying flyers.

Lap records and benchmarks (by series - long circuit 2.411 km)

  • F3000 - race lap (outright): 0:50.5769 - Gary West, Lola T87/50, 2007.
  • Supercars - race lap: 0:53.7293 - James Courtney, Holden ZB Commodore, 2019. Practice/qualifying bests have dipped to 0:53.44 under lights.
  • GT3 - race lap: 0:53.8065 - Christopher Mies, Audi R8 LMS Evo, 2023.
  • Sports Sedan - race lap: 0:53.1680 - Tony Ricciardello, Alfa Romeo GTV-Chevrolet, 2019.
  • Bike circuit reference: 0:55.909 - Cameron Stronach, Yamaha YZF-R1, 2022 (2.413 km 9-turn bike layout).

Why go?

Perth’s home of big-time motorsport delivers elbows-out sprint racing with constant action. The short lap keeps fields compressed, strategy pivots on tyre life and safety cars, and the venue’s modern infield pits bring fans close to teams. Supercars’ Perth Super 440 adds night sessions that look spectacular.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • Main straight - T1: Starts, restarts and a high-speed turn-in that separates the brave from the conservative, with pit action opposite.
  • Mid-lap heavy stop: Classic divebomb zone after the longest acceleration segment on the lap. Great for photos as cars fight wheelspin on exit.
  • Final corner: Downhill approach where mistakes decide last-lap switches and the slingshot to the flag.

Not just one series - headline events at Wanneroo

Supercars Championship: Long-time Western Australian round, currently branded Perth Super 440.

GT World Challenge Australia: GT3 and GT4 action with sub-54s laps from front-runners.

National scene: Super2, Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, TA2 and Aussie Racing Cars frequently feature on stacked WA race weekends.
