When was the track built?

Conceived in the late 2000s and designed by Hermann Tilke, the circuit was officially inaugurated on 18 October 2011. The flowing 5.125 km Grand Prix course features elevation changes and multiple racing lines, with a very long pit lane and a huge back straight engineered to create overtaking opportunities.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race was the 2011 Indian Grand Prix on 30 October 2011. Formula 1 ran three editions here from 2011 to 2013. Top-level two-wheel racing arrived with the Indian motorcycle Grand Prix in 2023.

What's the circuit like?

  • Power then patience: A 1.2 km back straight into a heavy stop sets up classic slipstream passes before the technical middle sector and the fast double-right of 10-11.
  • Banking and camber: The MotoGP layout highlighted the lightly banked Turns 8-9 and a tricky Turn 1 that punished poor braking traces.
  • Strategy wrinkle: One of the longest pit lanes in Grand Prix racing increases pit loss and shapes strategy.
  • Benchmark pace: F1 race-lap 1:27.249 and MotoGP race-lap 1:45.028 define the top-tier ceilings for four and two wheels respectively.

Lap records and benchmarks (by series)

  • Formula 1 - race lap: 1:27.249 - Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull RB7, 2011. Pole: 1:24.178 - Sebastian Vettel, 2011.
  • MotoGP - race lap: 1:45.028 - Marco Bezzecchi, Ducati GP22, 2023. Pole: 1:43.947 - Marco Bezzecchi, 2023.
  • Truck Racing - short course outright: 1:47.204 - David Vršecký, Tata Prima, 2017.

Why go?

It’s a big, modern grandstand experience with proper speed. You get draft-to-brake duels on one of the region’s longest straights, a sweeping stadium-style final sector and excellent sightlines across multiple corners. After F1’s 2011–2013 run, MotoGP’s debut in 2023 drew huge crowds, and local initiatives continue to push for more world-level events.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • T1 grandstands: Starts, restarts and the heaviest stop of the lap after a long run from the grid or back straight depending on series.
  • Turn 3 to Turn 4 hairpin: See slipstreaming and last-second lunges after the 1.2 km blast.
  • Final sector - around Turn 16: Stadium vibe, mistakes here decide the drag to the flag and photo finishes.

Not just one series - headline events at Buddh

Formula 1: Indian Grand Prix 2011–2013.

MotoGP: IndianOil Grand Prix of India debuted in 2023 - subsequent rounds postponed with a return targeted for 2026 per organizers.
