When was the track built?
Grobnik was constructed during the late 1970s after the nearby Opatija street circuit was judged too dangerous for modern international racing. The new permanent venue opened in September 1978 on a rocky plateau above Rijeka.
Its first major event was the Yugoslavian Motorcycle Grand Prix. The circuit continued to host motorcycle World Championship racing until 1990.
How has the circuit changed?
Unlike many older tracks, Grobnik has kept almost the same basic layout since it opened. Its most important recent change was a complete resurfacing carried out between December 2017 and April 2018.
The smoother asphalt improved grip and lap times while preserving the fast corners and traditional character that made the circuit popular with riders.

Automotodrom Grobnik is in the hills above Rijeka on Croatia's northern Adriatic coast. Driving is the easiest way to visit, with the circuit close to the A6/A7 motorway network. Driving to the circuit
Driving is straightforward because Grobnik sits close to the motorway connecting Rijeka with Zagreb and the rest of Croatia.
- From Rijeka: take the A7 towards Zagreb and use the Grobnik/Čavle exit.
- From Zagreb: follow the A6 west towards Rijeka and then follow signs for Grobnik.
- From Slovenia or Italy: approach Rijeka through the motorway network and continue towards the Grobnik/Čavle exit.

The circuit is well signposted from the motorway. Allow additional time when a major race meeting is taking place.
Bus & train
Travelling without a car is possible, but there is no railway station or regular city bus directly at the circuit entrance.
- Rijeka: use the city as your main railway and bus hub.
- Autotrolej buses: suburban routes 12, 12A, 12B, 14 and 15 serve the wider Čavle and Grobnik area.
- Route 12B: travels through Čavle and Soboli towards Platak and can be useful for reaching the wider area.
- Final journey: a taxi or pre-arranged lift is the easiest way to complete the trip to the circuit.
