When was the track built?

Conceived in the late 1980s to restore top-tier road racing to the Midwest, the complex opened in 1989 with a 2.5 mile road course, NHRA drag strip and expansive paddocks. The track gained a full surface and pit-lane repave in 2016 using polymer-enhanced asphalt to improve grip and consistency.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race weekend was the IMSA Camel GT Grand Prix on 13 August 1989, kicking off a calendar that soon included AMA Superbike, Trans-Am, NASCAR Trucks and three years of SCCA National Championship Runoffs.

What's the circuit like?

  • Straight into stop: A long front straight feeds a heavy-brake Turn 1 left-hander that sets race rhythm and tyre temps early in the stint.
  • Flowing mid-sector: Medium-speed sweepers reward a planted platform and patient throttle to keep minimum speed high.
  • Bus-stop option: The fast 8-9 section can be configured as a chicane, adding another passing zone and braking challenge.
  • Multiple configurations: 1.8, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.5 mile options allow everything from club sprints to endurance and time attack.
  • Benchmark pace: IMSA GTP race-lap 1:27.880 (1991) showcases the layout’s speed ceiling; Trans-Am’s 1:39.558 (2006) is a modern reference for the later GP spec.

Lap records and benchmarks (by series)

  • IMSA GTP - race lap (original GP): 1:27.880 - Wayne Taylor, Intrepid RM-1, 1991.
  • Trans-Am - race lap (GP 2004–07): 1:39.558 - Tomy Drissi, Jaguar XKR, 2006.
  • SCCA Runoffs era: Hosted 2006–2008 across multiple course options; divisional records maintained for 1.8–2.5 mile variants.
  • NHRA Heartland Nationals (drag strip): National event mainstay from 1989–2019 and 2021–2023.

Why go?

When active, Heartland combined big-event infrastructure with classic Midwest road-course flow, and the on-site drag strip and 22 acre autocross pad made it a true multi-discipline weekend. If operations resume under new ownership, expect a fan-friendly paddock, long-sightline viewing and genuine overtakes into T1 and the bus-stop.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • Turn 1 grandstand/embankment: Starts, restarts and classic out-braking into the left-hander.
  • Fast 8-9 bus-stop: If configured, it creates a second heavy-braking pass zone mid-lap.
  • Final complex and pit straight: Traction to the line with pit stops in view.

Not just the road course: headline history

NHRA Heartland Nationals: Quarter-mile showpiece for three decades.

SCCA National Championship Runoffs: 2006–2008 editions brought massive multi-class fields.

AMA Superbike, NASCAR Trucks, Trans-Am, IMSA GT: A who’s-who of American series raced here through the 1990s–2000s.
