When was the track built?

Ground was broken on 5 April 1995 and the facility opened in July 1997 as Germany’s first major circuit in the former East. The arena-style site elevates spectator areas 6–8 m above track level for panoramic views. Ownership changes in 2005 led to upgrades in 2007, including the current tight Turn 1 intended to boost overtaking.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race weekend ran on 25 July 1997 with Ferrari Challenge, followed by FIA GT and FIA F3000 season openers in 1998 that cemented Oschersleben’s international profile.

What's the circuit like?

  • Stop-then-flow rhythm: The reprofiled Turn 1 funnels the field into a heavy stop, then the lap opens into sweeping direction changes through the Triple and on toward Hotel corner. Starts are lively and reward precision on cold tyres.
  • Flat and technical: Minimal elevation puts emphasis on platform control, traction on corner exits and keeping minimum speed high through the linked mid-lap bends.
  • Two personalities: Cars use the 3.696 km GP loop with the tight T1 - bikes typically use the 3.668 km “Moto A” without the same first-corner profile.
  • Benchmark pace: Auto GP’s 1:18.846 stands for the GP course; the Motorcycle A course outright is 1:15.050 by FR3.5. Modern DTM testing laps run ~1:20.0.

Lap records and benchmarks (by series)

  • Auto GP - GP 3.696 km: 1:18.846 - Sergey Afanasyev, 2011.
  • Formula Renault 3.5 - Moto A 3.668 km: 1:15.050 - Andreas Zuber, 2005.
  • DTM - race-lap (Moto A layout era): 1:20.791 - Mattias Ekström, 2005. Recent GT3 race laps around 1:22.6.
  • GT/Prototypes - references: Porsche 911 GT1-98 1:20.206 (1998 FIA GT) - LMP3 1:20.305 (2023 Prototype Cup).

Why go?

An “arena” in more than name - raised spectator banks let you follow battles across multiple corners. DTM, Carrera Cup, GT4 and IDM Superbikes deliver constant elbows-out action, and endurance fans know the EWC 8 Hours of Oschersleben for strategy swings and night vibes.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • T1 grandstands: Divebombs and first-lap drama at the tight hairpin introduced in 2007.
  • Triple to Hotel section: See momentum driving, track-limit flirting and cutbacks before the short chute to the final turns.
  • Main straight: Pit stops, penalties and the sprint to the flag with paddock action in view.

Not just one series: headline events at Oschersleben

DTM: A modern staple with overtakes anchored around T1 and the stadium-like mid-sector.

WTCC/ETCC history: From 2001 through 2011, top touring cars traded paint here.

FIM EWC - 8 Hours of Oschersleben: Classic German endurance bike race with stacked factory entries.

NASCAR Whelen Euro Series: Added American-flavor stock cars to the bill from 2023.
