When was the track built?
Construction began in 1964 after Darlington Raceway builder Harold Brasington and landowner Bill Land proposed a major speedway for Richmond County. Financial difficulties threatened the project, but local business and community leaders helped complete the circuit.
Rockingham opened as a relatively flat one-mile oval in 1965. A major 1969 reconstruction introduced steeper banking and created the faster 1.017-mile layout used for most of its famous NASCAR history.
State funding and private investment supported a modern revival from 2021. The oval was completely repaved in 2022, grandstands and safety fencing were repaired, and the infield road course was resurfaced in 2024.
When was its first race?
The first race was the NASCAR Grand National Series American 500 on 31 October 1965. Curtis Turner led 239 of 500 laps and defeated Cale Yarborough by approximately 11 seconds.
The successful opening immediately established Rockingham as an important stop on NASCAR's top-level schedule.
What's the circuit like?
- Different corner pairs: Turns 1-2 are less steeply banked than Turns 3-4, so one vehicle setup must handle two distinct challenges.
- Long backstretch: Drivers can build speed before entering the circuit's more heavily banked final corners.
- D-shaped front section: The curved frontstretch creates an unusual approach to Turn 1 and affects overtaking lines.
- Very fast modern surface: The 2022 asphalt provides more grip and considerably less tyre wear than Rockingham's famously abrasive older surface.
Although the lap looks simple, drivers must manage high cornering speeds while staying close to other cars. Small mistakes can quickly place a car in the slower lane or against the outside wall.

Qualifying laps are normally faster than race laps. Records from the older 1.017-mile surface cannot be compared directly with times from the current 0.940-mile oval.
Why is it famous?
Rockingham was a regular NASCAR Cup Series venue from 1965 to 2004. Richard Petty won here a record 11 times, while Dale Earnhardt secured his seventh Cup championship at the circuit in 1994.
The final Cup race in 2004 ended with Matt Kenseth defeating rookie Kasey Kahne by only 0.010 seconds. NASCAR national-series racing eventually returned in 2025, followed by another successful weekend in April 2026.
What events are held here?
The modern NASCAR weekend includes the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series, Craftsman Truck Series and ARCA Menards Series East. The complex can also host stock-car events, testing, festivals, concerts and other large gatherings.
The International Hot Rod Association purchased Rockingham Speedway in 2026 and announced plans to preserve its history while improving the venue and expanding its event programme.
Why go?
Rockingham gives visitors the atmosphere of a traditional American speedway without the enormous scale of some modern superspeedways. The compact oval allows spectators in the higher grandstand rows to follow almost the entire race.
Major weekends may include a fan zone, driver appearances, hospitality areas and several camping options. The city of Rockingham is only a short drive from the speedway.
Where's the best place to watch?
- Upper frontstretch grandstand: Provides the clearest overall view of the oval and developing race strategies.
- Turns 1-2: Watch drivers enter from the curved frontstretch and fight for the preferred racing line.
- Turns 3-4: The steepest banking and fast exit create impressive side-by-side racing.
- Start and finish area: Best for the opening laps, chequered flag and pit-road activity.

Transportation & Parking
Getting to Rockingham Speedway (North Carolina)
Rockingham Speedway, usually called The Rock, is beside US Highway 1 north of Rockingham. Driving is the easiest everyday option, although special trains have also run directly to the speedway for major NASCAR weekends.
Current status
Rockingham Speedway is an active motorsports venue. NASCAR returned in 2025 after a long absence, and the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and CRAFTSMAN Truck Series returned again in April 2026.
Event schedules vary, so check the speedway calendar before making a special journey.
Driving & parking (easiest way)
- Navigation: enter 2152 US Route 1, Rockingham, NC 28379. The speedway is north of central Rockingham.
- From Charlotte: travel east towards Rockingham and join US-74 before following local signs towards US-1 and the speedway.
- From Raleigh or Fayetteville: approach Rockingham from the east and follow navigation towards US Highway 1.
- Major race weekends: temporary traffic patterns can operate on US-1 and Highway 177, so follow event signs and police directions rather than insisting on your normal GPS route.
- Parking: major NASCAR weekends provide thousands of free parking spaces, with closer paid parking also available.
Tip: Keep the event parking map available on your phone. The best entrance can depend on your grandstand, camping area or parking pass.
Train
- Hamlet Station: this is the useful regular Amtrak station for the Rockingham area. Arrange a taxi or pickup for the final journey.
- Special race trains: NC By Train has operated special NASCAR services directly to a temporary Rockingham Speedway platform during major race weekends.
- Do not assume the speedway train runs every event: the direct platform is event-specific rather than a normal everyday passenger service.
If a special race train is advertised for your event, it can avoid both parking and post-race road traffic.
Airports & transfers
- Fayetteville Regional Airport (FAY): the closest practical airport with scheduled airline service. Rental cars and taxis are available at the terminal.
- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT): a useful alternative for visitors who need a much wider choice of flights.
- Rental car: generally the easiest option from either airport, especially if you are staying for several days.
- Richmond County Airport: much closer to Rockingham but primarily useful for private and general aviation rather than normal airline passengers.
Camping & race weekends
- RV camping: NASCAR weekends offer several options, from premium paved spaces to trackside and dry camping.
- Dry camping: standard dry-camp spaces are basic and do not include normal utility hookups.
- Some premium RV areas: water service or electrical hookups are available depending on the camping category.
- Parking trams: major NASCAR events provide trams between designated parking areas and the grandstands.
Accessibility
- ADA parking: designated accessible parking is provided at major NASCAR weekends, subject to capacity.
