When was the track built?

Construction began in 1992 and the circuit opened on 21 August 1993 as Indonesia’s modern racing hub just south of Jakarta. The layout was conceived with ample runoff and a broad 15 m width to attract world championships, and it quickly did: WorldSBK from 1994 and MotoGP in 1996–1997.

When was its first race?

The venue’s first race season was 1993 after the August opening. Global spotlight arrived with the Indonesian Motorcycle Grand Prix in 1996 and 1997, with Mick Doohan and Tadayuki Okada among the winners. WorldSBK also made Sentul its Indonesian home from 1994 to 1997.

What's the circuit like?

  • Straight-into-stop DNA: The 900 m pit straight funnels into a tight T1, then accelerates toward the fast right-hand T2 before a second big stop at T3. Overtaking hinges on braking stability and traction.
  • Flow and heat: Medium-speed arcs reward a planted front end, while Indonesia’s heat and humidity make tyre life and cooling management critical across stints.
  • Benchmark pace: Bruno Senna’s 1:15.686 (GP2 Asia, 2008) remains the official car benchmark; 500cc/MotoGP race laps were in the 1:27–1:30s in the 1990s.

Lap records and benchmarks (by series)

  • GP2 Asia - outright (race lap): 1:15.686 - Bruno Senna, 2008.
  • MotoGP/500cc - race lap reference: 1:27.139 - Mick Doohan, 1996 500cc GP.
  • WorldSBK - Indonesia era: Sentul hosted 1994–1997, closing the 1997 season here.
  • A1 Grand Prix: Hosted rounds including Dec 10, 2006.
  • Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, GP2 Asia, Speedcar, Asia Road Racing: 2000s fixtures that set modern car and bike references.

Why go?

Sentul is Indonesia’s classic motorsport amphitheatre: easy access from Jakarta, big viewer banks, and racing that swings between high-speed blasts and heavy-brake scraps. National series and major Asian championships keep the schedule full and the paddock lively.

Where's the best place to watch?

  • Main grandstand/T1: Starts, pit work and the heaviest stop of the lap after the 900 m draft.
  • T2 fast right: See who dares to carry speed from the T1 exit into the long-radius sweep.
  • T3 hairpin complex: Classic divebomb zone that sets up passes through the infield.

Not just one series - headline events at Sentul

WorldSBK: 1994–1997 Indonesian rounds, with title contenders often sealing seasons here.

MotoGP/500cc: Indonesian GPs in 1996 and 1997 put Sentul on the world stage.

A1GP, GP2 Asia, Speedcar, Porsche Carrera Cup Asia, Asia Road Racing: A steady stream of international categories built the circuit’s multi-discipline pedigree through the 2000s.
